What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. “Similar technologies” include local storage, which lets a website remember settings on your device. Some are essential for a site to work; others, such as analytics and advertising cookies, are optional.

Your choices

Current status: this website does not currently use any optional analytics or advertising cookies – only the essential storage listed below. If that changes, a consent choice will be shown before any optional cookies are set.

You can change or withdraw consent at any time with the Cookie settings link in the footer of every page. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the site will keep working, although some optional features may not.

Essential storage (always active)

Name Type Purpose Duration
bw-theme Local storage Remembers whether you chose light or dark mode Until you clear it
bw-consent Local storage Remembers your cookie choices so we don’t ask on every page Until you clear it

These do not track you and are never sent to us.

Analytics cookies (optional, only if enabled and consented)

Name Provider Purpose Duration
_ga Google Analytics 4 Distinguishes visitors to produce anonymous usage statistics Up to 2 years
_ga_<container-id> Google Analytics 4 Maintains session state for statistics Up to 2 years

Advertising cookies (optional, only if advertising is enabled)

When Google AdSense advertising is active, Google and its partners may set cookies such as __gads, __gpi, IDE and NID to deliver and measure ads, limit how often you see the same ad, and prevent fraud. If you consent to personalised advertising, these cookies may also be used to show ads based on your interests. A full description is available in Google’s advertising technologies policy.

For visitors in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, a Google-certified consent message asks for your choices before personalised advertising cookies are used.

Embedded YouTube videos

Video players on our guides use click-to-load: nothing from the YouTube player loads until you press play. When you do, the video is served from youtube-nocookie.com, and YouTube may store data in your browser (for example to remember playback settings or measure views). See Google’s Privacy Policy.

Our guides link to official documentation on other websites. Those sites have their own cookie policies, which we do not control.
